Below you will find September updates:

Protest: New animal protection bill excludes the majority of animals

It is the biggest reform of the Animal Welfare Act in 10 years, but it promises hardly any improvements for the majority of animals. This is because it lacks important measures to protect the 750 million farmed animals living in Germany every year. Animal Equality and Vier Pfoten joined forces to hold a large protest at the Bundestag in Berlin on 28th September to demand stronger laws for farmed animals.

Animal Equality celebrates Animal Month

4th September until 4th October marks the second edition of Animal Month, a period in which Animal Equality is dedicated to speak about the lesser-known aspects of animals exploited for human consumption. By drawing attention to their ethological characteristics and bringing to light the stories of rescued animals, Animal Equality will encourage more and more people to understand that every animal, including those exploited for human consumption, has their own identity and the right to live a life that is protected, respected, and free from exploitation.

Animal Equality - India

Animal Equality launches an investigation exposing the cruel and illegal practices in slaughter of animals used by the dairy industry

The investigation conducted in six slaughterhouses in Maharashtra and Kerala exposes how butchers repeatedly slit an animal’s throat, resulting in severe shock. Evidence also revealed other cruel practices including killing being carried out in full view of each animal, repeated bludgeoning of animals with a hammer on the head, and butchers milking the animals one last time before they are slaughtered. Here you can find media coverage.

Love Veg

As a part of our Love Veg campaign, we proudly presented to 1,500 students in Pune on why and how to enjoy more plant-based food.

Accreditation scheme suspends three fish farms after investigative footage reveals salmon suffocating
Drone recordings from three accredited Scottish salmon farms supplying major supermarkets Marks & Spencer, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s showed over a dozen fish suffocating, being kicked, and being beaten, demonstrating systemic and extreme animal suffering. Prompting thought pieces in The Times and the Grocer, this latest exposé sparked fresh calls for consumers to ditch fish from their diets and for the UK’s devolved Governments to urgently enact species-specific legislation for farmed fish.

Judge grants permission for Animal Equality UK to challenge approval of UK’s first fully on-land salmon mega-farm

A High Court judge granted permission for Animal Equality UK to take North East Lincolnshire Council to court after it approved a 5,000 tonne on-land mega-farm and failed to consider animal welfare in the decision-making process - just 5% of cases make it this far. If constructed, the farm would be the first-of-its-kind, setting a dangerous global precedent. It would be responsible for confining around one million fish each year, require as much power as 3,200 homes, and produce as much effluent as 400,000 humans. Our case is represented by law firm, Advocates for Animals, and barrister, Alex Shattock, and this latest news has seen coverage in the BBC, the Guardian, and industry publications around the world.

Covert footage reveals tonnes of dead fish being lifted from a salmon farm just hours before Members of Scottish Parliament visit for a formal inquiry

Animal Equality investigators filmed tonnes of dead fish being removed from a fish farm just seven hours before Members of the Holyrood Rural Affairs and Islands Committee visited for an ongoing Parliamentary inquiry into the Scottish salmon industry. The inquiry follows one previously conducted in 2018 which called for stricter controls on sea lice, fish mortality and environmental impacts. A spokesperson for the Committee told reporters: “We have heard concerns about fish mortality on salmon farms during the wide range of evidence taken throughout our enquiry and this footage raises further questions for the committee.” The timely discovery comes just days before the industry is due to give evidence for the inquiry in Scottish Parliament and has garnered coverage on BBC One Scotland (including a 3 minute televised segment), the Guardian, The Times, the Daily Record and more.

Animal Equality continues nationwide protests against Aldi

In Chicago, Animal Equality protested outside an Aldi store. Advocates displayed a life-size cage that is typically used to confine pregnant pigs throughout their pregnancies. Meanwhile, advocates protested the grand opening of an Aldi store outside New York City in the Bronx. As the Bronx Borough President delivered her speech, volunteers held signs with messages like, “Low prices shouldn’t mean low standards.” While waiting in line, several customers pledged to question management about Aldi’s cage policy once inside.

New action alert! Animal Equality joins efforts to end horse slaughter

Animal Equality launched a new action in support of the SAFE Act for horses. Thousands have already sent their messages to legislators, urging them to support this legislation that would end the export and slaughter of horses from the U.S.

Celebrating Mexico's Independence with Plant-Based Traditional Dishes

From Love Veg, we launched a campaign to celebrate September—Mexico's National Independence Month. We shared three original recipe books featuring traditional Mexican dishes in their delicious plant-based versions and offered plant-based workshops at two universities.

Celebrating 12 years in Mexico

During this time, we have achieved historic reforms, including the country's first law protecting animals used for human consumption. Additionally, we have inspired more than 1.5 million people to subscribe to Love Veg and start leaving animals off their plates.

Animal protection law in Colima, Mexico, is now in effect

In July, Colima, Mexico approved our initiative to protect animals on farms, impacting nearly 9 million animals. It went into effect this month after the state government published it in the state’s Official Gazette.

New trial ordered in pig farm abuse case

In 2018, Animal Equality, along with Jordi Évole for the TV show Salvadosdocumented animal abuse at a pig farm in Spain and filed charges against the owners. In May 2024, the farm owners were acquitted of 14 charges of animal cruelty. We appealed the decision, and, finally, it has been overturned—a new trial will be held!

ABBA Hotels commits to cage-free in Spain

Thanks to our campaign, ABBA Hotels has committed to stopping using eggs from caged hens. They have already reached 100% cage-free eggs in all their locations, eliminating this extreme suffering for over 14,000 hens annually. We remain focused on our accountability efforts through ongoing outreach and campaigns. Reducing the percentage of caged hens in Spain is a priority—our goal is to lower it from 68% in 2023 to 40% by 2028.

Animal Equality - Brazil

Animal Equality Brazil launched a campaign to eliminate the use of eggs from caged hens in the hotel industry. The campaign aims to call on three of the top leaders of the hospitality industry to release cage-free commitments: Selina, Bourbon and Blue Three. In Brazil almost 95% of hens are still kept in cages, suffering in inhumane conditions. The campaign has the potential to impact 508,000 animals annually. We invite you to sign our petition.

We’re thrilled to share a victory for animals and truth in advertising! Thanks to Animal Outlook’s lawsuit, filed with the incredible support of Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC), the nearly 100-year-old DC butcher shop, Harvey’s Market, has agreed to stop selling foie gras forever. The case, filed in the District of Columbia Superior Court, challenged Harvey’s Market’s alleged deceptive advertising practices related to foie gras. The lawsuit alleged that Harvey’s Market falsely promoted foie gras as “HUMANELY RAISED STOCK” and “FREE RANGE,” among other allegedly misleading claims. These statements were displayed inside Harvey’s Market in a manner that suggested they applied to every product in the meat case, including foie gras. AO and LIC argued that animals subjected to gavage (force-feeding) to produce foie gras can never be “humanely raised,” and that animals raised entirely indoors without outdoor access cannot be considered “free range.” Thanks to the efforts of LIC’s amazing legal team—Kathryn Evans and Alene Anello—we were able to send the message that deceptive claims about animal welfare will not go unchallenged. As part of the case, LIC sourced a unique poll of DC consumers to show 75% believe “humane raised stock” to be an inaccurate description of the birds used to make foie gras. A further 80% said they would not consider such birds to be “free range”. And when shown an image of the meat case from Harvey’s Market approximately 65% said they thought the signage applied to all products in the case, including the foie gras.  While Harvey’s Market did not admit liability, Animal Outlook voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit on July 1, 2025, following the confidential settlement agreement.

Hi all! We’re happy to share that Super Festval, a supermarket brand part of Grupo Beal (former “Companhia Beal de Alimentos’), has officially published a commitment to exclusively source pork from group housing systems during gestation in Brazil by 2028, considering preferably preimplantation systems where sows are housed in stalls for no longer than 7 days. You can read the announcement in Portuguese on the company website here. Super Festval is a traditional family business with a local well-known brand and 39 stores in the state of Paraná, south of Brazil. The organizations Alianima, Fórum Animal, Humane World for Animals and Sinergia Animal engaged in corporate relationship with the company for 5 years of negotiations, combining strategies of friendly negotiation, technical support and public campaign warning to accelerate the commitment. The negotiations were positively influenced by the fact that Super Festval has a cage-free commitment fulfilled in 2024 (see their report to the Egglab audit). This is a successful case to strengthen animal welfare policies negotiations with retailers in Brazil. At the moment, it's important to increase the number of animal welfare policies implemented in Brazilian retail in order to promote progress in this sector that is traditionally less receptive to animal welfare policies. We will continue monitoring the implementation of Super Festval commitment, encouraging the company to report their evolution annually, asking to participate in Alianima’s Pig Watch report and extending its animal welfare policies to additional species, for example nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). For the animals,

Today marks a historic win for animal advocacy in Brazil, thanks to the combined efforts of Humane World for Animals, Te Protejo, , Fórum Animal and Change.org .  On July 9, 2025, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved the Senate substitute for PL 6602/13 (now PL 3062/22), banning federal animal testing for cosmetics, personal hygiene products, and perfumes. Why this is huge: •  1.6 million+ signatures delivered a powerful public mandate. •  A decade in the making—originally filed in 2013, it finally broke its long legislative stalemate. •  Brazil moves closer to becoming the world’s 45th country to outlaw cosmetic animal testing, sparing millions of animals from suffering. Besides us, the project had the support of many activists and other organizations and institutions such as the Department of Animal Protection that was created within the Ministry of the Environment in Brazil. Next steps: The bill goes to presidential signature. After enactment and a 60-day vacatio legis, ANVISA and other agencies will have up to two years to implement alternative testing methods and enforce the law. This breakthrough proves what we can achieve when we unite. Let’s keep up the momentum—share this news, raise your voice, and push for a cruelty-free future!

Iceland Foods committed to eliminating eyestalk ablation and implementing pre-slaughter electric stunning across their own-label prawn range by the end of 2027. ICAW has been running a campaign against Iceland for several months inclusive of digital actions, in-person demonstrations (including 70 people gathering in London in May) and other pressure tactics. Only 3 retailers have yet to commit to higher prawn welfare in the UK: Aldi, LIDL and ASDA. Thank you to everyone involved for supporting our campaign!
