Animal Equality - Mexico

Animal Equality joins the working group for the General Animal Protection Law

The formal process to create the General Animal Protection Law, following constitutional reforms last December, has begun in the Chamber of Deputies. A working group was organized to gather input from various sectors of society. We participated to ensure that farmed animals are included in this legislation. Join us in advocating for them by supporting our campaign here.

Love Veg begins 2025 plant-based cooking workshops

Love Veg and Las Colmenas, a government-run center for underserved communities in Guadalajara City, have signed an agreement to offer free plant-based cooking workshops throughout 2025. These workshops will teach families to prepare nutritious, affordable meals that promote health, sustainability, and compassion. Last year, we held 26 workshops; this year, we're planning to conduct over 60.

Eurogroup for Animals highlights the work of Animal Equality in Mexico

Eurogroup for Animals has released a report emphasizing the importance of including animals in EU-Mexico trade negotiations. It highlights the investigations and legislative efforts of Animal Equality in Mexico, which have successfully led to the creation of various animal protection laws in the country.

Animal Equality participated at the Effective Altruism Event in Mexico City

At the #EAGxCDMX event, Animal Equality connected with other organizations and activists to strengthen our movement for animal protection. We shared our experiences with a talk about "The Case of Mexico and the Constitutional Change" and learned about impactful initiatives from other groups.

Inspiring students to advocate for farmed animals

To encourage students to support animal protection, we visited the Autonomous Metropolitan University and hosted a talk about how various professions can influence animal advocacy. Additionally, we introduced students to iAnimal, our virtual reality experience that lets people view life from the perspective of farmed animals.

Animal Equality - Spain

Advocating for plant-based school meals in Spain

Animal Equality called on Spain's government to provide plant-based meal options in schools for students who request them. The proposal is part of a new national policy set to take effect in the 2025-2026 school year.

Calves stranded at port: Call to end live animal transport

Three trucks carrying calves were halted at the Port of Cartagena, Spain, for exceeding permitted driving hours. The calves endured over ten hours without food or water before being shipped to Libya for slaughter, where EU animal welfare standards aren't followed. This incident highlights the urgent need to end live animal exports outside the EU, as their welfare can't be assured during long journeys, and they aren't slaughtered according to international standards in regions like the Middle East and North Africa.

Animal Equality opposes delays in pig welfare improvements in Spain

Animal Equality has objected to a decree amendment that extends the deadline for the Spanish pig industry to meet EU animal welfare standards by an additional year. The delayed improvements include increasing space, creating isolation zones, and implementing stress-prevention measures to avoid routine tail-docking. Originally set for March 2025, the Agriculture Ministry now proposes extending the deadline to March 2026.

Animal Equality - Germany

Animal Protection must be included in the coalition agreement

Our campaign ‘Tierschutz ist nicht verhandelbar’ (‘Animal welfare is non-negotiable’) has entered the first hot phase: After the potential coalition parties started their negotiations to build the next federal government we launched a package of measures. We addressed social media actions, letters and personalized videos emphasizing the necessity for an enhanced animal protection to the responsible decision makers who take part in the coalition negotiations demanding the new government to include animal protection in the coalition agreement.

Protests against Ahold Delhaize

In Germany we joined the campaign against Ahold Delhaize after its broken promise to ban the use of cages in its US supply chains. We started both online and offline actions not only against Ahold Delhaize but also against other companies such as Pandora, Customs Support Group and Mobico that share Board Members with Ahold Delhaize. With three public protests and multiple online actions we and our Animal Defenders called for an end of cages for hens and mother pigs.

Animal Equality - UK

Labour voters demand foie gras import ban, poll shows

Animal Equality UK commissioned a YouGov poll revealing that 93% of Labour voters surveyed (excluding the ‘don’t know’ responses), believe the Government should fulfil its pledge to ban the importation of foie gras made by force-feeding, while 62% of UK citizens polled (excluding the ‘don’t know’ responses) stated that they do not trust the Government on the issue of animal welfare. The poll was released via the Express, alongside an opinion piece calling for a ban.

Animal Equality and environmental NGO, Feedback, peacefully protest onshore salmon farm with Baroness from House of Lords

Meeting with the community in Cleethorpes, Animal Equality and Feedback joined forces to peacefully protest with locals against a proposed on-land salmon mega-farm. Animal Equality currently has a judicial review underway, which has delayed the facility’s construction by a year and a half, after Planning Committee Members approved the proposed farm and failed to treat animal welfare as a potential material land use consideration. Community members shared with the NGOs and with Baroness Natalie Bennett their love of the land, its rare local wildlife, and their concerns over the animal welfare and environmental impacts of the onshore fish factory.

Holding Ahold Delhaize accountable

Animal Equality peacefully protested outside the offices of Bunzl and London’s central Pandora store, both of which are linked to Board Members of Ahold Delhaize. The global conglomerate committed to removing cages for mother pigs and hens from its supply chain and has failed to follow through on its promise; Animal Equality’s international team is publicly protesting this inaction and ensuring Ahold Delhaize’s key decision-makers use their influence to remove animals from cages.

Fiery debate prompts Members of Scottish Parliament (MSP) to call for halt to the Scottish salmon industry’s growth

Following years of exposés from Animal Equality and others, revealing soaring deaths on farms, record fish escapes, and a lack of adequate legal enforcement, the Scottish farmed salmon industry has been given a 12-month deadline to clean up its act, in what one MSP described as a “last chance saloon”. MSPs from the Scottish National Party, Labour, Green, and Conservative parties expressed concern over the Scottish farmed salmon industry’s operations, with several supporting a proposed halt to the industry’s expansion. In an impassioned speech one MSP said that Scottish salmon farming was leaving a “trail of pollution, suffering, and harm to our coastal communities” and that, with rising sea temperatures, the industry’s “days are numbered”. She concluded by stating that Scotland must “send a message to industry, to our export partners and to the people of Scotland: we will not sacrifice our seas for corporate profits”, posing the question to her peers: “will we be the ones remembered to be the ones who ignored the warnings or the ones who took action?”.

Animal Equality - Brazil

Love Veg Brazil

On 20th March (World Meat-Free Day), Animal Equality's Love Veg initiative was featured in Brazilian media for the first time (link). The press release highlighted Brazil's rapidly growing plant-based market, which is expanding by approximately 40% annually, while introducing Love Veg's mission to increase accessibility to plant-based foods. Since its 2023 launch in Brazil, Love Veg has recorded over 150,000 website visits and more than 60,000 recipe downloads. The press release achieved an estimated media reach of six thousand people, effectively raising awareness about plant-based options in Brazil.

Campaign Hotels without Cruelty

As part of the tactics of the Campaign Hotels without Cruelty, Animal Equality Brazil team  participated in an event for women leaders and questioned the CEO and founder of the Blue Tree Hotels, Chieko Aoki,  what measures the brand would take to free hens from cages in their supply chain. This public questioning was positive since her response was “this is an issue that is being discussed in all Hotel Chains since you are doing a massive action". This respectful approach opened the door for restarting negotiations, while we continue with the campaign. (Instagram Post)

Animal Equality - India

Love Veg India

As a part of our Love Veg campaign, we reached out to 280 college students in Pune on why and how to enjoy more plant-based food.

Cage-free eggs transition

Animal Equality has been persuading egg producers to adopt a cage-free housing system for hens. In March we persuaded two egg producers to go cage-free, impacting 6000 hens annually.

Animal Equality - Italy

Animal Equality Italia joins the international campaign calling on Ahold Delhaize

We urge the company to keep its promise and eliminate cages for mother pigs and hens from its supply chain. Through public pressure, the organization is urging the company’s decision-makers to take responsibility and put an end to this cruelty.

Animal Equality - US

The U.S. is looking to ban horse slaughter for good

The SAFE Act was reintroduced in the Senate this February, aiming to stop the export of U.S. horses for slaughter abroad. While horse slaughter no longer takes place in the U.S., tens of thousands are still shipped to Mexico and Canada each year. Animal Equality is urging U.S. residents to contact their representatives and demand support for the SAFE Act.

Ahold Delhaize faces global backlash for links to animal cruelty

Ahold Delhaize—the global company behind Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop—is under fire for failing to meet its animal protection commitments. The campaign against the grocery giant went international this past month, with protests erupting across Europe. Animal Equality is demanding Ahold Delhaize deliver clear plans to end cages for hens and pregnant pigs. Email Ahold Delhaize executives today and demand they stop delaying their promises.

Slovenia Passes Law to Ban Cages for Hens by 2028 Slovenia has officially passed a law banning cage farming for hens, with a full phase-out by the end of 2028. It applies to laying hens, pullets, and all parent flocks.  The new very ambitious law passed on Thursday, 24th July. In a fourth, and final, vote by the National Assembly, overturning a veto passed by the National council. For farm animals, beyond the cage ban, the new legislation brings two unprecedented wins: * A ban on piglet castration without pain relief (requiring analgesia and anaesthesia). The procedure can only be done by a vet and no longer by the farmers themselves. * State-funded sanctuaries for horses and other equines. Retired police horses and equines confiscated by inspection are the responsibility of the state. And will now have a chance at life in state-funded farm animal sanctuaries. The fight happened on multiple fronts. But thanks to the massive support of the Slovenian public for cage-free, achieved by relentless campaigning, the cage ban ended up carrying the law. And the opposition to progressive reform was overrun.  This is more than a policy win — it is a sign from yet another country that legislative change is achievable for farm animals and worth persuing. Additionally, a cage ban in another EU member state paves the way for a cage-free Europe. Cities across Europe are stepping up for climate, health, and animal protection. Alcorcón, El Masnou, and Parla in Spain, Grenoble in France, and Campolide in Portugal have recently endorsed the call for a global Plant Based Treaty to cut food emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. Their commitments include: * Piloting plant-based meals in public dining halls and city facilities, and banning land use changes for animal agriculture (Alcorcón) * Requiring at least 50% plant-based catering at municipal events (El Masnou) * Prioritizing plant-based food in public procurement and developing a local sustainable food strategy, including plant-based menus in school cafeterias, day centres and residencies (Parla) * Increasing plant-based options in canteens and at events, and promoting initiatives such as Veganuary (Grenoble) * Organizing community-based plant-based cooking workshops and running educational programs in schools to raise awareness of food system impacts and encourage dietary shifts (Campolide)   To date, 45 cities globally have endorsed the Plant Based Treaty, and with your support, our teams are transforming food policy one city at a time as we build momentum to secure our first country endorsement.

AI is advancing incredibly fast. We might see AI systems that are better than most humans at many tasks within a few years. This would change things drastically for animals in factory farms, in the wild, and beyond… and therefore animal advocates’ strategies should change, too. In this post, I argue: 1. Based on recent trends in AI capabilities and advances in training techniques, truly transformative AI could arrive soon, e.g. by 2030. 2. This matters for animal advocates (if you agree it could arrive soon), because transformative AI will change the game for animals—for better or worse. 3. Animal advocates might reasonably: 1. Optimise harder for immediate results (not results in e.g. 5+ years’ time) 2. Predict how AI will change things, and try to make that go well for animals 3. Try to increase the concern that AIs or their controllers show for animals 4. Focus on building capacity to prepare for TAI 5. Shift to AI welfare, to protect potential sentient AIs from suffering 6. Shift towards all-inclusive AI safety But this is not something that animal advocates can afford to just ignore. You can change your own strategies and next steps in the light of this. This post is intended as a bit of a wake up call. For more measured, sensible posts, see here and here instead.
