What would it mean to you if you could dedicate your time, talent, and energy to creating a more just and sustainable food system?

Working at New Roots Institute isn't a job for us; it's a commitment to a cause. We are a growing nonprofit dedicated to ending factory farming, and we are seeking a passionate and experienced Manager of Leadership Development to join our team!

Is New Roots Institute the right place for you? Here’s what you should know:

  • We value having the opportunity to make a difference and aren’t afraid of working hard. We’re looking for people who possess the resilience and determination to excel in fast-paced and demanding roles while understanding how to differentiate between working really hard (good) and unsustainable self-sacrifice (not so good).
  • We continuously question our own biases and assumptions and adapt when we recognize we’re wrong. We’re looking for people who are self-aware and know how to put their ego aside to achieve shared goals.
  • We're results-oriented, strive for excellence, and are looking for people who can say they never miss deadlines.
  • Giving and receiving honest and direct feedback is foundational to our culture. We're looking for people who are eager to use constructive feedback to grow, and help others to grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Because we work remotely, proactive communication and quick responses are key to building trust and working effectively together. We’re looking for people who excel at keeping everyone updated.
  • We genuinely enjoy working together and look for ways to have fun, despite the tragic nature of what we are up against. Check out our Rotten Truth series on YouTube to see how we use humor to grapple with the grim reality of factory farming.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and mentor a team of program coordinators and facilitators in training high school and college students to become emerging leaders in the movement to end factory farming and drive community change.
  • Own and implement a comprehensive fellowship curriculum that supports fellows in building a highly networked and cohesive community, and developing foundational knowledge and relational literacy needed to succeed.
  • Ensure the seamless and efficient operation of the fellowship program.
  • Support and train facilitators in creating supportive learning environments where fellows feel comfortable exploring diverse viewpoints and expanding their understanding.
  • Develop strategies for fostering a community of engaged fellow and alumni, and tracking alumni updates and career movements.
  • Interpret data to inform curriculum development decisions and make strategic improvements to program effectiveness and community engagement.
  • Consult on organizational-level strategy.

This role requires someone who is:

  • Effective at people management (minimum of 2+ years experience supervising direct reports). You possess a proven track record of effectively managing, mentoring, and developing teams. You are skilled at fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment, providing clear direction, offering constructive feedback, and empowering team members to achieve their full potential.
  • Highly skilled in program and project management. You excel at planning, organizing, and executing complex programs and projects. You are adept at developing timelines, managing resources, mitigating risks, and ensuring projects stay on track and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Able to hold yourself and others accountable for embodying values and achieving needed outcomes. You are comfortable setting clear expectations, tracking progress, providing direct feedback, and managing up to ensure alignment and support.
  • Proficient in strong analytical, macro-level, and systems thinking. You are adept at assessing program effectiveness, identifying areas for improvement, and understanding how organizational components and the broader movement intersect to address systemic issues and optimize impact.
  • Proactive and solutions-oriented. You are a self-starter who anticipates challenges, takes initiative, and develops creative solutions. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and are driven to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of programs.
  • A strong communicator and collaborator. You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to clearly articulate ideas, build consensus, and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including team members, fellows, alumni, and partner organizations.

Other requirements:

  • Shared vegan and anti-speciesist values. No one on our team consumes animals or animal products or believes that non-human animals can ethically be treated as resources for human use.

This is a full-time, remote position with a salary of $70,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance; and unlimited PTO.

We value diversity, equity, and inclusion and are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels welcome and respected. We strongly encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, especially those who identify as Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, and people from the global majority. Please note that we are only considering applicants based in the United States at this time.

Fórum Animal are pleased to announce that Alfa Piscicultura, a Brazilian tilapia producer, has committed to maintain animal welfare standards. This includes daily water quality assessments and keeping predators away from tanks. Additionally, Pizza Prime, the largest pizza franchise in Brazil, published its crate-free commitment to only buy pork from suppliers that work with sows group housing throughout gestation. Pizza Prime has committed to making this transition by 2026. You can find both commitments in Portuguese by accessing: * Alfa Piscicultura: "Bem-estar" at the Instagram profile @alfapiscicultura * Pizza Prime: website post In terms of impact, we estimate that Alfa Piscicultura's commitment will guarantee the benefit of over 1.400.000 tilapias per year! On the other hand, Pizza Prime's crate-free commitment should benefit over 259 pigs per year. Pizza Prime should also contribute to impact thousands of consumers with its new animal welfare policy that will be applied to the company's 70 stores across the country. We conducted 1 year of friendly negotiation with the companies. Our next steps will be to encourage both companies to share their success story in animal welfare and to Pizza Prime report its progress. For the animals.

For two months last year (Oct-Dec) Animal Outlook's investigator worked undercover at Manning Beef, Los Angeles' last remaining cow slaughterhouse. Manning Beef has long been embroiled in controversy notably during a 2021 incident when 40 cows escaped and a 2017 attempt to silence activists through litigation. Our investigator recorded one of the bloodiest and goriest videos in Animal Outlook's 30-year history. Over a two-month period, we found abuses including: * Multiple cows being butchered while showing signs of sensibility to pain  * A downed dairy cow repeatedly shocked with cattle prods after collapsing, then shot in the head three times with a captive bolt gun  * A worker stabbing a cow in the back of the head, then draining the cow's blood by stabbing them in the throat. This cow flailed while being butchered alive.  * A cow vomiting while their face was skinned and being restrained while moving away from the knife  * A cow left on the floor of the slaughterhouse for over half an hour * Extreme operational errors and equipment malfunctions. One cow was dropped head first from the slaughter line onto the concrete floor * Piles of unborn calf fetuses, extracted from pregnant cows sent to slaughter. Animal Outlook has submitted comprehensive video evidence and legal documentation to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, calling for a minimum of 95 criminal animal cruelty counts against Manning Beef, its owners, and its employees. We also uncovered information in this process showing that the slaughterhouse is in bankruptcy. Manning Beef has a long history of inhumane handling violations. Between 2018-2024 the company racked up 61 enforcement notices for inhumane handling, including two suspensions. The company's 2020 USDA suspension due to "an egregious act of inhumane handling of animals." In 2022, the company was again suspended for "a trend of repetitive noncompliance" with stunning requirements. Last week, the USDA issued Manning
