The Animal Caregiver (live-in) is responsible for the cleaning, feeding, and medicating of the animal residents as well as supervising animal care staff and volunteers. Organization Description: Animal Place is an animal rights organization promoting the complete protection of farmed animals and a vegan lifestyle. We operate a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA that serves as a permanent safe haven for farmed animals and an education center. Adjacent to the Grass Valley Sanctuary is our Guest House, which houses visitors and volunteers.

Job Description: The Animal Caregiver (live-in) is responsible for the cleaning, feeding, and medicating of the animal residents as well as supervising animal care staff and volunteers. You work under the supervision of the Animal Care Manager and alongside a team of dedicated caregivers to provide care of the 300+ animals (pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys, sheep, goats, rabbits, donkeys, tortoises) at the sanctuary. Qualifications

  • Passionate about working for and with farmed animals and a commitment to Animal Place’s mission
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with animals in a professional setting 
  • Good animal behavior and observation skills
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Able to follow detailed instructions and meet time sensitive demands
  • Able to learn and process new information quickly
  • Reliable, dependable, team player and self-motivator
  •  Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet weather (average low is 35F) and hot summers (average high is 95-100F)
  • Able to lift 40-50 pounds and perform strenuous/manual labor
  • Willing and able to work on weekend/holidays/varying shift times
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record (subject to verification)
  • Able to drive Animal Place vehicles including trucks, cargo vans, and stock trailers
  • Vegan lifestyle required (No animal products permitted in the housing unit or on sanctuary grounds)

Job Duties

  • Animal feeding/watering
  • Daily animal health care and maintaining treatment records
  • Daily cleaning duties and maintaining the shelter areas
  • Assisting with veterinary visits
  • Completing shelter projects as assigned
  • Maintaining sanctuary grounds
  • Training and supervising caregivers and animal care volunteers
  • Transport animals as needed for rescues and veterinary appointments

 Additional live-in responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • On-call 2-3 days a week, on-call must remain on the property overnight
  • Handle emergency situations independently
  • Able to take lead and direct volunteers, interns, and other employees in emergency situations
  • Excellent problem solving, animal observation and critical thinking skills

Hours/Days: 40 hours/week, days vary; schedule subject to change at any time, required to work weekends and most holidays.

Salary: $17/hour, performance evaluation after 6 months

Benefits: Health insurance after 90 days, 180-day probation period for live-in caregivers, 403b (Animal Place matches 3% after one year), vacation, holiday and sick time package, 500$/year veterinary stipend. 

On-site Housing: 1-bedroom apartment on sanctuary grounds, including utilities. One-person occupancy limit. Companion animals are subject to approval.

In news of progress for our global campaign to ban octopus farming, a federal bill to prevent the commercial farming of octopuses, as well as the importation and sale of commercially farmed octopuses, has been reintroduced by U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).  The bipartisan legislation was originally introduced in 2024 and is being brought forward again now due to continued momentum at the federal level for the bill to become law. It is preceded by the introduction of similar legislation in various U.S. states, including formal laws in California and Washington.    The bill, referred to as “Opposing the Cultivation and Trade of Octopus Produced through Unethical Strategies Act of 2025” or the “OCTOPUS Act of 2025,” prohibits any authorization of commercial octopus aquaculture operations in the United States and its exclusive economic zone. The bill also prohibits the importation into the United States - or the re-exportation - of commercially aquacultured octopus, including any living or dead specimens, parts, or derivatives, or any product containing specimens, parts, or derivatives of such octopus.   We at Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) believe that the reintroduction of this federal bill signifies a watershed moment in protecting against the environmental, ethical, and public health challenges associated with octopus farming. This bill, as well as other recent legislative progress, follows the advocacy efforts of several NGOs, including ALI, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and more. Hi FAST Friends!!! I have exciting news! A California court has ruled that LIC's cruelty lawsuit can proceed against well-known dairy operation Alexandre Family Farm, which supplies Whole Foods and other large grocers.  Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) is the plaintiff in the lawsuit. We allege that Alexandre workers pour table salt into cows’ eyes, drag disabled cows across concrete, and starve cattle.  The lawsuit followed Farm Forward's April 2024 exposé revealing “systemic deception, cruelty, and animal abuse” at Alexandre Family Farm. Farm Forward documented and released those findings with the help of rancher whistleblowers who came forward to bring these activities to light.  The Humboldt County Superior Court's well-reasoned eight-page ruling affirmed LIC’s power, as a California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA), to prevent cruelty through civil litigation:  > “[T]he Court finds that an SPCA filing and prosecuting a civil action to enjoin violations of animal cruelty laws . . . is one of the multiple avenues for the enforcement of California’s animal cruelty laws.” We hope other companies that abuse animals will look at this and start to rethink their behavior. Alexandre is also the subject of a separate federal class action alleging that it falsely represented Alexandre Family Farm products as “humane.”  LIC's Equal Justice Fellow, Isabella Nilsson, did the oral argument. Hello everyone, We are excited to share that Aurora Coop, the third-largest pork producer in Brazil and a major exporter, has officially committed to implementing a pre-implantation system (complete phase-out of the use of crates during gestation) in all its new units with an immediate effect. With this new commitment, we now have five of the largest Brazilian pig producers with pre-implantation systems in new units (JBS, BRF, Aurora, Alibem and Pamplona). You can read the official commitment here (in Portuguese). * Scale: Brazil. * Timeline: 6 months of campaigning by Sinergia Animal and several years of negotiation. * Other organizations involved in dialogue with the company: Fórum Animal, Humane World for Animals, and Alianima. Monitoring and Follow-up: Aurora Coop will report its progress annually.
