Title: Fast Victory: WAITROSE commits to pre-slaughter electric stunning for farmed prawns.

Waitrose, the upscale UK retailer, has published a time-bound commitment to implement electric stunning for all prawns in its global supply chain by the end of 2026.

That decision comes after negotiations with the International Council on Animal Welfare and will replace the controversial practice of leaving the animals to suffocate in ice slurry while still conscious.

This commitment will positively impact approximately 29 million prawns each year during slaughter, sparing them an average of three hours of disabling-equivalent pain (McKay & McAuliffe, 2024)

By publishing this commitment, Waitrose joins Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer, and Ocado, all of which are already committed to pre-slaughter electric stunning.

Scale: UK
Timeline: full implementation by the end of 2026.

Who: The International Council For Animal Welfare (ICAW)

Background: Waitrose was one of the first supermarkets to phase out eyestalk ablation for prawns by the end of 2023. They were currently working on trialing electric stunning without having made a clear time bound commitment.

Successful tactics: ICAW engaged with Waitrose through corporate outreach and campaign tactics. We shared a campaign website and our plan to communicate more publicly about the lack of time bound commitment. Waitrose published the commitment a few hours after the campaign website was shared.

At ACE, we are committed to ensuring that every donation is put to the best possible use. As part of this commitment, we are conducting an internal assessment of our programmatic work, and we would love to hear from you. We are seeking your input to better understand how familiar the farmed animal advocacy community is with our work, how people use our work, and the positive and negative effects our charity evaluations, recommendations, and grants have on organizations and individuals working in animal advocacy. Your feedback is incredibly important in helping us improve our work. The survey will take roughly 15 minutes, and your insights will directly shape our efforts moving forward. ACCESS THE SURVEY The survey will be open until June 15th, 2025. We appreciate your time and support! The ACE team.

Hi everyone, Fórum Animal is pleased to announce that Piscicultura Água Pura/Recanto Sol Nascente has publicly committed to improving the welfare of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)! The company has reinforced its commitment in 2025 to continue implementing the following practices: ·        Daily assessment of water quality ·        Removal of predators from tanks ·        Transporting animals only in good quality water The company primarily sells live animals. However, when slaughter is necessary, the public commitment also ensures that animals will be slaughtered with adequate prior stunning methods such as electric stunning or percussive shock. Fórum Animal engaged in friendly negotiations with the company in April 2025 based on our "Guidelines for Commitment to Animal Welfare in Fish Farming". We estimate that this commitment will benefit 300,000 tilapia annually in Brazil! Check out the commitment in Portuguese [here]. We will continue negotiating fish welfare commitments with other companies to expand the positive impact on millions of lives. For the animals!

Hello everyone! We’re pleased to announce our first cage-free commitment from a supermarket: Franco Supermercado, a retailer with four stores in Arequipa and one in Lima, has committed to selling only 100% cage-free eggs by the end of 2026. Commitment link: You can see the publication of the commitment in this LINK. Scale: National (Perú) Timeline:  Compromiso Verde first established contact during a visit to Arequipa in April 2023. We followed up during a second trip in September 2024, where we arranged an in-person meeting. After several months without a response, we successfully reengaged the company by sending a corporate gift for Friendship Day. This gesture led to two additional face-to-face meetings in February 2025, during which we also explored how Compromiso Verde could support them in developing a cage-free egg farm through our PROBA certification program for local producers. ARBA began conversations with Franco Supermercado in November 2024 through emails, WhatsApp messages, and phone calls. Who: Compromiso Verde and ARBA Unsuccessful Tactics: None. Successful Tactics: In-person meetings at the company’s offices in Lima and Arequipa, delivered a corporate gift, and offered support for cage-free egg production through the PROBA program. Scalability: This commitment is significant as it comes from a supermarket chain with locations in Peru's two largest cities. Follow Up: We will stay in touch to request reports and validate compliance with the commitment.  Thank you!
