Introducing FoodFacts.org: Navigating Facts in the Age of Nutrition Misinformation

In a digital landscape where the lines between fact and fiction are increasingly blurred, the recent decision by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to end third-party fact-checking on platforms like Facebook and Instagram has raised significant concerns. This move, replacing professional fact-checkers with a community-driven system, has been described by The Guardian as "an extinction-level event" for truth on social media. (theguardian.com)

In response to this pressing challenge, we are proud to announce the launch of FoodFacts.org, a pioneering platform dedicated to providing accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information about the food we consume. Our mission is to empower individuals, policymakers, and industry leaders with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions in an era rife with misinformation.

Key Features of FoodFacts.org:

  • AI-Powered Chatbot: At the heart of our platform is an innovative AI-driven chatbot designed to enhance user experience. • Comprehensive Fact-Checking: In a time when independent fact-checking is being diminished on major social media platforms, FoodFacts.org serves as a reliable source of accurate information. Our team of experts rigorously analyzes and verifies content, ensuring that our users have access to factual and unbiased insights.

  • User-Friendly Interface: Navigating the complexities of food information can be daunting. Our platform offers an intuitive design, making it easy for users to find the information they need quickly and efficiently.

Why FoodFacts.org Matters Now More Than Ever:

The shift by major social media platforms away from professional fact-checking to community-based systems has sparked widespread concern. Critics argue that this approach may lead to increased dissemination of misinformation, as it relies on users to police content without the expertise required to discern fact from fiction. The Guardian's recent commentary highlights the gravity of this issue, emphasizing the potential for unchecked falsehoods to proliferate. citeturn0search0

FoodFacts.org emerges as a crucial resource in this context, offering a trusted platform where accuracy is paramount. Our commitment to facts and transparency ensures that users can confidently rely on the information we provide.

Comments from Robbie Lockie, Founder of FoodFacts.org:

"The decision to remove independent fact-checking from major social media platforms is deeply troubling. We live in an age where misinformation spreads faster than ever, and without rigorous fact-checking, the public is left vulnerable to false claims that can have serious consequences for public health, policy, and consumer choices."

"Food is one of the most fundamental aspects of human life, and yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. FoodFacts.org is here to cut through the noise, debunk myths, and give people access to trustworthy, science-backed information."

"Our AI-powered chatbot is a game-changer in how people interact with food-related information. It ensures that no matter where you are on our platform, you get accurate, relevant, and contextualized insights without having to dig through misinformation."

"We urge policymakers, journalists, and consumers to join us in this fight for scientific fact. Without access to reliable information, we are allowing the food industry and misinformation campaigns to dictate what we believe about the very thing that keeps us alive."

Comments from Dr Elise Hutchinson Phd, Lead Researcher and Cofounder of Foodfacts.org

“Our starting point as fact-checkers is to address and correct widely circulating claims that could harm people’s health and well-being. But our mission extends beyond the correction of inaccuracies. We analyse and expose the broader narratives that tie these claims together and that makes them persuasive, helping our readers understand the mechanisms behind misinformation. More importantly, we aim to equip our readers with the tools to critically evaluate online nutrition information. Fact-checking is a rigorous and essential process—one that restores balance in the conversation and ensures that expert voices rise above the noise of misinformation."

Looking Ahead:

As we embark on this journey, we invite individuals, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore FoodFacts.org. Together, we can foster a more informed society, combat misinformation, and make choices that benefit our health and our planet.

In news of progress for our global campaign to ban octopus farming, a federal bill to prevent the commercial farming of octopuses, as well as the importation and sale of commercially farmed octopuses, has been reintroduced by U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).  The bipartisan legislation was originally introduced in 2024 and is being brought forward again now due to continued momentum at the federal level for the bill to become law. It is preceded by the introduction of similar legislation in various U.S. states, including formal laws in California and Washington.    The bill, referred to as “Opposing the Cultivation and Trade of Octopus Produced through Unethical Strategies Act of 2025” or the “OCTOPUS Act of 2025,” prohibits any authorization of commercial octopus aquaculture operations in the United States and its exclusive economic zone. The bill also prohibits the importation into the United States - or the re-exportation - of commercially aquacultured octopus, including any living or dead specimens, parts, or derivatives, or any product containing specimens, parts, or derivatives of such octopus.   We at Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) believe that the reintroduction of this federal bill signifies a watershed moment in protecting against the environmental, ethical, and public health challenges associated with octopus farming. This bill, as well as other recent legislative progress, follows the advocacy efforts of several NGOs, including ALI, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and more. ALI has actively supported this bill via conversations with Senator Whitehouse’s office and by sending the scientific material essential to craft the bill in an evidence-based manner.   More recent progress on the global campaign to ban octopus farming include: * In May, together with Animals Aotearoa and other Aquatic Animal Alliance members, Aquatic Life Institute and 168 organizations signed an open letter urging New Zealand’s government to stop fund

Hi FAST Friends!!! I have exciting news! A California court has ruled that LIC's cruelty lawsuit can proceed against well-known dairy operation Alexandre Family Farm, which supplies Whole Foods and other large grocers.  Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) is the plaintiff in the lawsuit. We allege that Alexandre workers pour table salt into cows’ eyes, drag disabled cows across concrete, and starve cattle.  The lawsuit followed Farm Forward's April 2024 exposé revealing “systemic deception, cruelty, and animal abuse” at Alexandre Family Farm. Farm Forward documented and released those findings with the help of rancher whistleblowers who came forward to bring these activities to light.  The Humboldt County Superior Court's well-reasoned eight-page ruling affirmed LIC’s power, as a California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA), to prevent cruelty through civil litigation:  > “[T]he Court finds that an SPCA filing and prosecuting a civil action to enjoin violations of animal cruelty laws . . . is one of the multiple avenues for the enforcement of California’s animal cruelty laws.” We hope other companies that abuse animals will look at this and start to rethink their behavior. Alexandre is also the subject of a separate federal class action alleging that it falsely represented Alexandre Family Farm products as “humane.”  LIC's Equal Justice Fellow, Isabella Nilsson, did the oral argument. She crushed it. Thank you to everyone in FAST who helped make this happen in various ways. <3 <3 <3 Here's to standing up against cruelty. Sincerely, Alene & LIC

Spain sees a reduction of two million caged hens The number of caged hens for egg production in Spain has dropped by two million in the past year, with the percentage in cages falling from 67% in 2023 to 64% in 2024.
