Hello, FAST! As a team, we are thrilled to introduce you to the website of our Aquatic Welfare program—an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by aquatic animals. Our primary focus is the new Aquaculture Law. As some of you may know, the presidential message that will initiate this bill began to take shape last year, drafted by lawyers from the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture. From day one, we have been actively engaged in the process, participating in government-led workshops across different regions, preparing reports for the public participation process, and holding meetings with the project’s drafters. There is still a long road ahead, particularly with the legislative process, which will take place in Congress throughout 2025 and could potentially extend into 2026. This new law presents many key issues to explore, from defining the fundamental principles of animal welfare that should be regulated, to the challenge of determining how broad or specific the President will choose to make the bill. Additionally, it raises the question of potential bans on new farmed species, such as octopuses—an emerging species in Chile's aquaculture industry. We invite you to learn more, support this initiative, and share your feedback. We also hope that our efforts serve as a valuable resource for other organizations joining this crucial legal process that Chile will face in the coming years. Of course, we are proud members of the Aquatic Animal Alliance, reinforcing our commitment to the global protection of aquatic animals. We also deeply appreciate that Igualdad Animal México led our work on this topic throughout the past year. Thank you for your interest and dedication to defending aquatic animals! 🌊🐟 Marysabel Pavez Director Fundación Derecho y Defensa Animal (DYDAnimal Chile or DYDA)

We are happy to share that Pizza Prime, one of the largest pizza franchises in Brazil, with 70 restaurants in various states, has committed to go cage-free by 2026. You can see their commitment in portuguese here. Scale: We estimate this commitment will benefit over 1431 hens per year. Timeline: 6 months. Who: Fórum Animal. Successful Tactics: Our corporate relationship with Pizza Prime happened smoothly since the company managers found it easy to implement the commitment with its current suppliers. They were also open to implement feasibility studies to incorporate animal welfare guidelines within the company involving their franchisees. Follow Up: We will encourage Pizza Prime to keep the transition process transparent through the Fórum Animal Egglab audit and to share its success story with other companies on the journey to a cage-free supply chain.

Hello everyone! We are thrilled to announce the launch of our campaign, Desafío sin Jaulas (Cage-Free Challenge), which aims to improve the welfare of laying hens. We invite you to visit our website and share your feedback if you’d like!   To kick off our efforts, we’ve already secured two commitments: Holy Bar and Cafe del Barrio, both located in Santiago, Chile. Our goal is to expand nationwide and, of course, start engaging with larger food chains. This campaign joins others under the umbrella of Open Wing Alliance, which does an incredible job worldwide.   Best regards,  Kiara Espinoza Corporate Relations Manager Fundación Derecho y Defensa Animal (DYDA)

In this comprehensive recap, we reflect on Animal Welfare League’s work throughout 2024, share our vision for 2025 and beyond. This effort is part of our dedication to open communication, enabling our partners, donors, and other supporters to learn about our achievements, challenges, and strategic goals, as well as to offer feedback on our future direction. Snapshot of AWL’s 2024 * We secured three 100% cage-free commitments in Ghana, which have already been fulfilled through the National Cage-Free Directory. The commitments are from Accra City Hotel, Sannak Hotel, and Sky Plus Hotel & Resort. * We carried out two egg producer workshops in the Bono and Volta regions, which brought together 76 egg producers. Of these, 61 joined the National Cage-Free Farmers Network, making a total of 154 egg producers in the network and 70 egg producers (+1 egg supplier) in the National Cage-Free Directory in Ghana. As a result, an estimated over 1.2 million hens are committed to cage-free housing that upholds our minimum welfare standards. * We commissioned two research studies, “Economic Analysis of Poultry Production Systems: Cage-free vs Battery Cages” and “Assessing the Attitude of Ghanaians towards Farmed Chicken Welfare, Higher Welfare Egg-Labeling, and Willingness to Pay,” which evaluate key questions on the economics and consumer awareness of animal welfare in chicken farming in Ghana. We also have a manuscript in consideration at a journal on “From Awareness to Action: Evaluating Animal Welfare Attitudes and Practices in Ghanaian School Children.” * We launched an essay competition that received 20+ submissions. We have also developed a campaign video to launch our consumer awareness campaign in 2025. * We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghana Standards Authority for a project on developing the country’s first national poultry standards. * Oyiwaladorn (which means “Thank You” in the Ghanaian language, “Ga”) to everyone who supported and engaged us in

We are happy to share that VPJ Alimentos, a Brazilian cold cut and meat processing company, publicized its decision to work exclusively with suppliers that keep sows in group pens throughout gestation, in the ‘preimplantation’ system, along other animal welfare standards. You can see their public commitment in Portuguese here. Scale: We estimate this commitment will impact over 3,700 animals per year. Timeline: 2 years. Who: Alianima, Fórum Animal and Humane Society International. Successful Tactics: VPJ Alimentos hadn't publicised the animal welfare guidelines already established for the company when selecting suppliers. Through a friendly corporate engagement Alianima, Fórum Animal and Humane Society International negotiated the importance for the company to publish its animal welfare standards in order to promote progress in the sector, especially the adoption of the pre implantation system in sows gestation.  The animal welfare standards of the company includes: sows into “preimplantation’ group housing system since 2018; abolition of ears notching for identification since 2018; use of immunocastration in male piglets since 2018; use of antimicrobials for therapeutic purposes only, without preventative and metaphylactic use or as a growth promoter since 2017; adoption of environmental enrichment and reduced stall density from the nursery stage onwards to prevent tail biting and mitigate its consequences since 2018.  Follow Up: We asked that company to be more transparent concerning tail docking and encourage VPJ to share its success story in internal and external animal welfare reports.

On February 11 2025, the Town Council of Caledon, Canada voted six-to-two in favour of endorsing the Plant Based Treaty initiative to improve the health of residents and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A third of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the food sector. The move means the Town of Caledon joins 35 towns and cities worldwide, including Brampton (Ontario), Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Edinburgh, in supporting a global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. A motion was introduced by Mayor Annette Groves and seconded by Councillor Tony Rosa, following a presentation to the Planning and Development Committee by Plant Based Treaty and EcoCaledon supporters. The motion states: > “That the Council of the Town of Caledon supports and endorses the Plant Based Treaty and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through plant-based approaches to food and food purchasing; and  > > That council directs staff to work with the Plant Based Treaty to include considerations for plant-based food and food purchasing in applicable future initiatives or work plans and report back to the Council as needed; and > > The Council directs staff to circulate a letter of support to the Region of Peel and relevant stakeholders, including The Honourable Mark Holland, MP, Minister of Health.”   “I am very pleased to endorse the Plant Based Treaty to help improve the quality of life for Caledon residents,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “We must continue to look at creative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through plant-based approaches to food and food purchasing to protect our future.” Lucrezia Chiappetta, co-chair of ecoCaledon, who joined Yarim Hinojosa, city campaigner, and Anita Krajnc, global campaign coordinator, at Plant Based Treaty yesterday in a deputation to Caledon city council, said, “It’s fantastic to see the Town of Caledon endorse the Plant Based Treaty! This commitment aligns with our shared goals at ecoCaledon to promote sustainable fo
