We are pleased to announce that Divan Group has made a comprehensive commitment to improving the welfare of the fish served in their operations. This commitment includes not only sourcing sea bass and sea bream that are harvested using electrical stunning systems, but also implementing other key welfare measures to ensure higher standards of animal care throughout the supply chain. The group is a local Turkish brand operating 17 hotels, 13 restaurants and 23 bakeries.

You can read the commitment on their website under the “Policies” section. However, it only applies to Türkiye, so it is unfortunately available in Turkish only.

Scale: Türkiye

Timeline: Following the release of our fish welfare report, we began engaging with Divan earlier this year after meeting them at a fair. Our communication progressed smoothly, as they were already familiar with animal welfare standards from our cage-free campaign. They actively started searching for fish farms that could meet the requirements of our commitment. After a couple months, they accepted the commitment letter and published it on their website.

Who: Future For Fish

Unsuccessful Tactics: There were no outright 'unsuccessful' tactics in achieving this commitment; however, our initial approach lacked the necessary speed. Informing them about the opportunity to receive a Fish Welfare Award upon fulfilling their commitment significantly accelerated the process. Another time-consuming aspect was waiting for them to publish the commitment on their website, which required additional follow-up and encouragement.

Successful Tactics: Leveraging the presence of producers already adhering to our standards, we highlighted the opportunity for them to be among the first fish commitments from a hotel making this pledge. Additionally, our strong relationship with them, established during our cage-free egg campaign, created a solid foundation for meaningful conversations and collaboration.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you need further information. Thank you!

Hello FAST members   Two months ago we submitted to the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agraria  (Senasa), an agency attached to the  Ministerio de Desarrollo Agrario y Riego  (Midagri), a regulatory proposal aimed at incorporating specific provisions of Animal welfare in the land transport of farm animals. Currently, national legislation only addresses health and hygiene requirements, without establishing criteria to guarantee minimum welfare conditions during transport. This regulatory gap has negative consequences, as it increases animal suffering and the incidence of injuries and mortality, particularly in situations of stress or accidents during transport. Our proposal seeks to align Peruvian regulations with the regional and international standardsIn this sense, we highlight the positive openness of Midagri and Senasa to evaluate the initiative and the relevance of the interest expressed by the Comunidad Andina, which has been promoting regulatory harmonization in this area among member countries.  In this regard, we have already held a meeting with the group of lawyers from both institutions, as well as with the Andean Community, advancing discussions toward the creation of a joint guide to animal welfare in the Peruvian land transportation system. We trust that the incorporation of animal welfare criteria in transport will represent a significant advance in both animal protection and welfare in the country. Great day, Iselda Livoni Arba Peru
