Animal Equality - Spain

Exposing the dairy industry in the Madrid Metro

Our new investigation of eleven dairy farms in Spain reveals cruel yet common practices: forced insemination, calf separation, and violence against cows. Many cows are tethered and restricted by electrification systems. To raise awareness, we have placed three billboards in the Madrid Metro, expected to be seen by five million people in one month.

Spain sees a reduction of two million caged hens

The number of caged hens for egg production in Spain has dropped by two million in the past year, with the percentage in cages falling from 67% in 2023 to 64% in 2024. Since Animal Equality began its advocacy in 2016, nearly 14 million hens have been freed, thanks to commitments from producers and companies, and increasing consumer awareness.

Animal Equality Brazil participates in historic delegation

Animal Equality took part in the 5th National Conference on the Environment, joining a team of 30 delegates who together achieved a historic victory for animals: the inclusion of six proposals for the defense and protection of animals—including those raised for human consumption—among the 100 most-voted proposals of the Conference, which will be incorporated into the National Policy for Climate Crisis Mitigation.

Among the approved proposals are the restriction of live animal transport and the implementation of a National Policy for Animal Protection and Defense, the latter being the 6th most-voted proposal of the Conference. The Ministry of the Environment will forward the most-voted proposals to other ministries for implementation.

Launch of legislative agenda

Animal Equality participated in the launch of the 2025 Animal Legislative Agenda in Brazil, an event organized by the organizations Alianima and World Animal Protection. The initiative, supported by various entities and parliamentarians, presents 12 priority bills aimed at protecting animals in the country. Among them are PL 2387/2022, which proposes ending the slaughter of equines; PL 90/2020, which seeks to ban the force-feeding used in foie gras production; and PL 5092/2023, which aims to end the extreme confinement of animals.

Brazil launches accountability campaign against Bauducco and Forno de Minas

Animal Equality launched the campaign ‘Empty Promises, Crowded Cages’, a strong and necessary initiative to hold Bauducco and Forno de Minas accountable. These companies committed in 2018 to eliminate eggs from hens confined in cages in their supply chains by 2025, but the deadline has arrived, and nothing has been done so far. Their commitment could impact the lives of over three million hens every year. Visit the campaign page and join us in this urgent movement!

Millions see reality of Scottish salmon farming

Animal Equality’s latest exposé into Scottish salmon was viewed by over six million people via Italy’s leading investigative reporting programme - Report Rai 3. The segment showed images of fish with open wounds, suffering from parasitic lice, and suffocating to death. As a result, the RSPCA Assured scheme suspended one site and is investigating the other.

Worker filmed urinating beside Scottish salmon pen

Animal Equality released drone footage of a salmon farm worker openly urinating into the salmon cages via leading Scottish newspaper, the Daily Record, prompting fish expert Mark Borthwick to point out that “these animals are literally suffocating in their own waste… the worker urinating into the salmon farm has correctly identified that the waters are hopelessly polluted, and his little contribution won’t make much of a difference.”  The clip went viral on social media, sparking an industry publication editorial that acknowledged footage like this is “shaping regulation, retail, and reputation”, and is now “part of the landscape the industry operates in”.

Expert report reveals millions of farmed trout at risk of painful deaths

In a report co-authored by Animal Equality and the Humane League UK, experts warned that a lack of legislation to protect trout at slaughter could be leaving tens of millions of animals to experience painful and prolonged deaths every year. Whilst farmed land animals are covered by some legal protection at slaughter (often not properly enforced), farmed fish are not. We are arguing that there is no good reason for this legal disparity: fish are also sentient and deserve meaningful legal protection from the worst abuses in their final moments of life.

Global protests against Ahold Delhaize’s broken promise

Our campaign against Ahold Delhaize continues with international protests highlighting the company’s failure to uphold a 2014 commitment to eliminate cages for mother pigs and hens in its U.S. supply chain. In May, protests took place in Germany and Lisbon, targeting board members and staff at events they attended. Meanwhile, a group returned to The Netherlands to raise awareness with videos and posters outside the company's headquarters.

Cage-free eggs transition with companies

Animal Equality has been working with food companies to transition to cage-free eggs in India. Following is the transition rate of some companies in Bangalore:

  • ITC Gardenia at 15%
  • Taj West End at 15%
  • Novotel at 25%
  • Grand Mercure at 75%
  • JW Marriott at 50%
  • Ritz Carlton at 75%
  • Fairfield Marriott at 50%

Cage-free egg transition with egg producers

Animal Equality has been persuading egg producers to adopt a cage-free housing system for hens. We persuaded three egg producers to go cage-free, impacting 3,000 hens in May.

Holding Toks Restaurants accountable for its cage-free commitment

We took to the streets, protesting and distributing flyers to consumers at Toks locations in Mexico City, Jalisco, and Querétaro. Toks made a commitment in 2016 to stop using eggs from caged hens by 2022, yet has failed to meet this deadline. We are ramping up our campaign to hold the company accountable.

Exposing the dairy industry to 5.5 million people monthly

We highlighted the cruel practices of the dairy industry with three billboards in the Mexico City Metro, the country's busiest transit system. Part of the ‘The Truth About Milk’ campaign, these billboards are projected to reach around 5.5 million people each month.

Continue pushing for the General Animal Protection Law

Following last year's constitutional reforms, Congress was expected to approve the General Animal Protection Law by 1st June 2025. While the current legislative session has ended without this approval, we are dedicated to ensuring it passes in the upcoming session starting in September.

Love Veg offers plant-based workshops

Love Veg continues hosting free plant-based cooking workshops. This month, we engaged families at Colmenas, a government community center in Mexico, teaching them how to create delicious meat alternatives using pulses.

Animal Equality - Italy

Animal Equality released new data showing that the majority of Italians do not eat horse meat

Animal Equality Italia released a new report on horse meat consumption in Italy, conducted in collaboration with the research institute Ipsos. The research confirms that horse meat consumption in Italy is a marginal practice. For this reason, we relaunched our campaign to ban horse slaughter nationwide and protect these sensitive animals from unnecessary suffering.

Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, publicly responded to Animal Equality’s campaign to end the killing of male chicks

After months of public pressure, the Minister acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the government is working on a national solution. This marks an important step forward in the fight to ban this cruel practice in Italy.

Online actions for the preservation of the office of the Federal Animal Welfare Commissioner

Together with our Animal Defenders, we have contacted the SPD members of parliament and asked them to support the retention of the office of the Federal Animal Welfare Commissioner. The final decision in this matter is still pending.

Information Booth at Billie Eilish Concerts

We were present with an information booth at Billie Eilish's ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ tour shows in Hanover, Berlin, and Cologne. Our aim was to advocate for a world where all animals are respected and protected from exploitation.

We’re thrilled to share a victory for animals and truth in advertising! Thanks to Animal Outlook’s lawsuit, filed with the incredible support of Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC), the nearly 100-year-old DC butcher shop, Harvey’s Market, has agreed to stop selling foie gras forever. The case, filed in the District of Columbia Superior Court, challenged Harvey’s Market’s alleged deceptive advertising practices related to foie gras. The lawsuit alleged that Harvey’s Market falsely promoted foie gras as “HUMANELY RAISED STOCK” and “FREE RANGE,” among other allegedly misleading claims. These statements were displayed inside Harvey’s Market in a manner that suggested they applied to every product in the meat case, including foie gras. AO and LIC argued that animals subjected to gavage (force-feeding) to produce foie gras can never be “humanely raised,” and that animals raised entirely indoors without outdoor access cannot be considered “free range.” Thanks to the efforts of LIC’s amazing legal team—Kathryn Evans and Alene Anello—we were able to send the message that deceptive claims about animal welfare will not go unchallenged. As part of the case, LIC sourced a unique poll of DC consumers to show 75% believe “humane raised stock” to be an inaccurate description of the birds used to make foie gras. A further 80% said they would not consider such birds to be “free range”. And when shown an image of the meat case from Harvey’s Market approximately 65% said they thought the signage applied to all products in the case, including the foie gras.  While Harvey’s Market did not admit liability, Animal Outlook voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit on July 1, 2025, following the confidential settlement agreement.

Hi all! We’re happy to share that Super Festval, a supermarket brand part of Grupo Beal (former “Companhia Beal de Alimentos’), has officially published a commitment to exclusively source pork from group housing systems during gestation in Brazil by 2028, considering preferably preimplantation systems where sows are housed in stalls for no longer than 7 days. You can read the announcement in Portuguese on the company website here. Super Festval is a traditional family business with a local well-known brand and 39 stores in the state of Paraná, south of Brazil. The organizations Alianima, Fórum Animal, Humane World for Animals and Sinergia Animal engaged in corporate relationship with the company for 5 years of negotiations, combining strategies of friendly negotiation, technical support and public campaign warning to accelerate the commitment. The negotiations were positively influenced by the fact that Super Festval has a cage-free commitment fulfilled in 2024 (see their report to the Egglab audit). This is a successful case to strengthen animal welfare policies negotiations with retailers in Brazil. At the moment, it's important to increase the number of animal welfare policies implemented in Brazilian retail in order to promote progress in this sector that is traditionally less receptive to animal welfare policies. We will continue monitoring the implementation of Super Festval commitment, encouraging the company to report their evolution annually, asking to participate in Alianima’s Pig Watch report and extending its animal welfare policies to additional species, for example nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). For the animals,

Today marks a historic win for animal advocacy in Brazil, thanks to the combined efforts of Humane World for Animals, Te Protejo, , Fórum Animal and Change.org .  On July 9, 2025, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved the Senate substitute for PL 6602/13 (now PL 3062/22), banning federal animal testing for cosmetics, personal hygiene products, and perfumes. Why this is huge: •  1.6 million+ signatures delivered a powerful public mandate. •  A decade in the making—originally filed in 2013, it finally broke its long legislative stalemate. •  Brazil moves closer to becoming the world’s 45th country to outlaw cosmetic animal testing, sparing millions of animals from suffering. Besides us, the project had the support of many activists and other organizations and institutions such as the Department of Animal Protection that was created within the Ministry of the Environment in Brazil. Next steps: The bill goes to presidential signature. After enactment and a 60-day vacatio legis, ANVISA and other agencies will have up to two years to implement alternative testing methods and enforce the law. This breakthrough proves what we can achieve when we unite. Let’s keep up the momentum—share this news, raise your voice, and push for a cruelty-free future!

Iceland Foods committed to eliminating eyestalk ablation and implementing pre-slaughter electric stunning across their own-label prawn range by the end of 2027. ICAW has been running a campaign against Iceland for several months inclusive of digital actions, in-person demonstrations (including 70 people gathering in London in May) and other pressure tactics. Only 3 retailers have yet to commit to higher prawn welfare in the UK: Aldi, LIDL and ASDA. Thank you to everyone involved for supporting our campaign!
