Hello everyone! We are pleased to share great news from Peru: Bill No. 12220/2025-CR has been introduced to the Congress of the Republic for the first time. This bill requires the use of anesthesia and analgesia for the detusking, tail docking, and castration of baby pigs. This bill, drafted by ARBA and promoted in collaboration with Te Protejo, will be accompanied by a media campaign to raise public awareness about these practices, which are largely unknown but cause unnecessary suffering to millions of piglets each year. The initiative is currently before the Agrarian Commission, where a long and complex phase of working groups and meetings with its members awaits us. At ARBA, we will align our strategies to address this process, aware that it will be challenging, but convinced of its importance in advancing the protection of animals raised for consumption in Peru. Since 2016, our country has had an Animal Welfare Law that prohibits unnecessary animal suffering. However, specific regulations are still needed to put an end to these practices that continue to cause avoidable pain. We invite you to sign and share the petition in support of this bill: https://chng.it/dkyVCXBNVm   If you would like us to send you the bill presented, please let us know, we would be happy to share it. Have a great week! Iselda

Hi Fast community! Just announcing a recent court case involving animal rights investigations that we think might be interesting as a benchmark. In Portugal, the organization Frente Animal has run a campaign against Jerónimo Martins, the largest food retailer in the country (under the Pingo Doce brand), and one of the largest in Europe as well (19th largest), as they also operate in Poland (Biedronka). Using undercover footage from broiler farms that clearly linked animal cruelty to their supply chain, they were pressured to adopt a series of reforms aligned with the ECC (European Chicken Commitment). Their immediate response was to charge us with defamation and to threaten judicial action the very next day after the campaign’s launch. They held their ground and moved forward with what has been seen as a typical SLAPP measure: a cease and desist order that demanded all campaign content be removed, and that Frente Animal pay a hefty fine if it did not comply. This was already groundbreaking for Portugal, as it was the first time that farmed animal welfare and rights were discussed in a court of law. Moreover, footage from these farms was extensively broadcast during the public court sessions. Eventually, with the support of an excellent attorney experienced in this area, the judge decided in favor of Frente Animal, rejecting the precautionary measure filed by Pingo Doce (Jerónimo Martins). In the ruling, the court recognized “the veracity of the images shown and the mistreatment to which animals are subjected during intensive farming, which must be banned.” We understand this paves the way for future legal advancements. Below we emphasize some points about what went well, what didn’t go so well, and what we’ve learned.   What went well (The Good) * The court recognized that there is clear animal cruelty in the broiler industry as a whole, which should be banned. They acknowledged the legitimacy of the footage and what was documented. * Frente Animal was a

Victory! The California Court of Appeal summarily denied Alexandre’s writ petition in the animal-cruelty lawsuit, Legal Impact for Chickens v. Alexandre Family Farm!  Alexandre had urged the appellate court to intervene and overturn the Humboldt County Superior Court's ruling that LIC, as a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, had the power to sue Alexandre for cruelty. The case will now return to Humboldt Superior Court to determine whether Alexandre illegally neglects and abuses its cattle. LIC's lawsuit cites an April 2024 exposé by charity Farm Forward which revealed “systemic deception, cruelty, and animal abuse” at Alexandre.  Learn more and read the ruling here: https://www.legalimpactforchickens.org/alexandre
