Hi everyone. I'm new to FAST.

I organize an online book club on animal advocacy on bookclubs.com, and the book we have chosen for October is Animal Liberation Now: The Definitive Classic Renewed. Since this book is such a classic and so many of us have already read it, I figured that this is a good opportunity to invite some additional people to join our book club.[1] Our previous (and current) books include

  • Dialogues on Ethical Vegetarianism (event link)
  • The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy ― and Why They Matter (event link)
  • The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter
  • Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?
  • An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us
  • The End of Animal Farming: How Scientists, Entrepreneurs, and Activists Are Building an Animal-Free Food System
  • How to Create a Vegan World: A Pragmatic Approach
  • Compassion, by the Pound: The Economics of Farm Animal Welfare

If you'd be interested to join the discussion, we are currently voting on the timing, and you can vote for a specific day/time here.

If you want to join the book club and get notified of future books and voting rounds, you can use this link to join.

If you frequent the Hive Slack workspace or the Effective Altruism Online Events Facebook group then you've probably seen me share similar events previously, and I always emphasize that the book club is friendly and unstructured; there are no assigned questions or discussion leaders, and it is okay if people join having only read part of the book (you don't need to feel pressured to complete the whole book in order to join the discussion, we aren't big on gatekeeping).

Note that this book club is not a company, a scheme, a training course, some kind of sales pitch, or a part of a formalized organization. It is just a few people having video chats every month or so to talk about animal-focused books. If you want to read more context, I've shared a Google Doc.
