About EA AWF

The AWF's mission is to alleviate the suffering of non-human animals globally through effective grantmaking.

Our grants portfolio prioritizes interventions that can collectively have the highest impact and help the greatest number of animals. Thus, we support projects focused on:

  • Reducing suffering and improving the lives of animals in factory farms
  • Bringing factory farming to an end
  • Positively affecting other groups of animals on a large scale
  • Supporting these goals by researching and piloting novel approaches and interventions

Since its founding in 2017, AWF has emerged as a major funder in effective animal advocacy (EAA), distributing $23.3M across 347 grants and contributing to building a more robust and diverse funding ecosystem. 2024 brought many positive changes and improvements to the fund, and we have ambitious plans for the future. You can read our 2024 review here.

Why join us?

  • Joining the AWF as a fund manager offers a high-impact opportunity to alleviate animal suffering on a global scale. AWF is dedicated to transforming animal welfare by deploying funds strategically to the most promising and effective interventions across a range of neglected and emerging areas, such as factory farming and invertebrate and wild animal welfare.
  • As a fund manager, you would be directly involved in identifying and evaluating grant opportunities and deciding how millions of dollars should be spent to advance AWF’s mission to maximize positive impact.
  • This role includes an intellectually stimulating process of assessing projects for the strength of their theory of change, scale of counterfactual impact, cost-effectiveness, and more.
  • You will be able to increase your knowledge across all areas that AWF’s grantmaking supports, such as policy advocacy, corporate reform, emerging welfare initiatives, movement building, and other strategies, as well as across various species such as chickens, wild animals, invertebrates, fish, and more.
  • You will also contribute to the broader ecosystem: By communicating your reasoning to the community through communications with applicants and public payout reports, you will indirectly contribute to the culture and epistemics of the EA and effective animal advocacy (EAA) community. By providing feedback, you will help existing projects improve. In the longer term, your work will help develop the capacity to allocate a potentially much greater volume of funding each year. While doing so, you will interact with other intellectually curious, experienced, and welcoming fund managers, all of whom share a profound drive to make the biggest difference they can.
  • You will be offered a competitive salary and generous benefits designed to best support you and your work.

Responsibilities

We are interested in experienced grantmakers, professionals working in various roles at animal advocacy organizations (such as campaign managers, policy experts, corporate outreach specialists, or program coordinators), and researchers, as well as junior applicants who are looking to build experience in grantmaking.

As a fund manager, your primary goal will be to source, investigate, and make decisions about grant opportunities, while also having the ability to contribute to other areas of AWF’s work.

  • Your core responsibilities will include:
    • Investigating and evaluating grants assigned to you
    • Reviewing and engaging with other fund managers’ grant recommendations
    • Voting on grant recommendations (each fund manager can vote on each grant)
    • Sourcing high-quality applications based on your ideas and fund strategy (‘active grantmaking’)
    • Communicating your thinking to the community in writing, e.g., feedback to grantees, grant reports, EA Forum posts and comments
  • If they wish, each fund manager can also contribute beyond those responsibilities to wider priorities of the fund, such as:
    • Providing input on the overall strategic direction of the fund
    • Conducting monitoring, evaluation, and learning based on previous grants
    • Improving grant evaluations and other processes
    • Broader responsibilities in communicating about our work and grantmaking
    • And more.

If you are interested in the fund manager role - please apply here.

If you know of anyone who might be a good fit for this role, please forward this document to them and encourage them to apply. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to Karolina via karolina@effectivealtruismfunds.org

Applications are open now until the 29 of December.

We look forward to hearing from you!

In news of progress for our global campaign to ban octopus farming, a federal bill to prevent the commercial farming of octopuses, as well as the importation and sale of commercially farmed octopuses, has been reintroduced by U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).  The bipartisan legislation was originally introduced in 2024 and is being brought forward again now due to continued momentum at the federal level for the bill to become law. It is preceded by the introduction of similar legislation in various U.S. states, including formal laws in California and Washington.    The bill, referred to as “Opposing the Cultivation and Trade of Octopus Produced through Unethical Strategies Act of 2025” or the “OCTOPUS Act of 2025,” prohibits any authorization of commercial octopus aquaculture operations in the United States and its exclusive economic zone. The bill also prohibits the importation into the United States - or the re-exportation - of commercially aquacultured octopus, including any living or dead specimens, parts, or derivatives, or any product containing specimens, parts, or derivatives of such octopus.   We at Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) believe that the reintroduction of this federal bill signifies a watershed moment in protecting against the environmental, ethical, and public health challenges associated with octopus farming. This bill, as well as other recent legislative progress, follows the advocacy efforts of several NGOs, including ALI, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and more. ALI has actively supported this bill via conversations with Senator Whitehouse’s office and by sending the scientific material essential to craft the bill in an evidence-based manner.   More recent progress on the global campaign to ban octopus farming include: * In May, together with Animals Aotearoa and other Aquatic Animal Alliance members, Aquatic Life Institute and 168 organizations signed an open letter urging New Zealand’s government to stop fund

Hi FAST Friends!!! I have exciting news! A California court has ruled that LIC's cruelty lawsuit can proceed against well-known dairy operation Alexandre Family Farm, which supplies Whole Foods and other large grocers.  Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) is the plaintiff in the lawsuit. We allege that Alexandre workers pour table salt into cows’ eyes, drag disabled cows across concrete, and starve cattle.  The lawsuit followed Farm Forward's April 2024 exposé revealing “systemic deception, cruelty, and animal abuse” at Alexandre Family Farm. Farm Forward documented and released those findings with the help of rancher whistleblowers who came forward to bring these activities to light.  The Humboldt County Superior Court's well-reasoned eight-page ruling affirmed LIC’s power, as a California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA), to prevent cruelty through civil litigation:  > “[T]he Court finds that an SPCA filing and prosecuting a civil action to enjoin violations of animal cruelty laws . . . is one of the multiple avenues for the enforcement of California’s animal cruelty laws.” We hope other companies that abuse animals will look at this and start to rethink their behavior. Alexandre is also the subject of a separate federal class action alleging that it falsely represented Alexandre Family Farm products as “humane.”  LIC's Equal Justice Fellow, Isabella Nilsson, did the oral argument. She crushed it. Thank you to everyone in FAST who helped make this happen in various ways. <3 <3 <3 Here's to standing up against cruelty. Sincerely, Alene & LIC
