The Specialist will manage existing relationships with certifier partners, track and report on certification updates, and play a vital role in expanding our network of certifier and ratings agency partnerships for future benchmark iterations.

WHO WE ARE

We achieve this by advocating for improved seafood certification standards, influencing corporate practices, and shaping government policies.

  • Refine the conditions in which animals are currently kept or captured in the seafood system and its supply chain.
  • Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain.
  • Reject the introduction of additional animals into the seafood system and its supply chain.

ALI’s Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark is a powerful instrument that we employ to help elevate industry norms and practices related to positive aquatic animal welfare.

We are a fully remote team, with staff distributed around the globe.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As ALI’s Seafood Certification Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in advancing aquatic animal welfare through your work in the following areas:

Annual Benchmark: You will lead the development, coordination, and publication of ALI’s annual certification schemes benchmark, assessing aquatic animal welfare standards across various schemes through collaborative relationships with new and existing certifier/ratings agency stakeholders. You’ll collaborate with the Head of Research to identify and engage with additional certifiers or ratings agencies, broadening the benchmark’s scope.

Certifier Recommendations: You will develop and refine recommendations for certifiers based on benchmark findings and industry research.

Tracking and Reporting: You will maintain an updated record of changes in certification standards, including those made by certifiers in response to ALI’s feedback.

Consultation Feedback: You’ll draft and submit feedback for open consultations with certifiers, ensuring that ALI’s welfare priorities and technical expertise are represented.

Relationship Management: You will establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with current certification bodies, enhancing ALI's influence and support for higher welfare standards.

WHO YOU ARE

To be successful in this position, you will have:

Knowledge of or willingness to learn about aquatic animal welfare, certification standards, sustainable sourcing, or related fields, and strong alignment with ALI’s mission to reduce the suffering of aquatic animals in the food system.

A degree in environmental science, marine biology, animal welfare science, sustainable agriculture, public policy, a related field, or demonstrated experience in interacting with certification bodies, standards organizations, or regulatory agencies, with an understanding of processes and the seafood industry landscape.

Strong ability to critically evaluate, compare, and synthesize certification standards and their impacts, whether on animal welfare, environmental sustainability, or social equity.

Proficiency in research methods and analysis. Detail-oriented approach to tracking changes in certification criteria, with experience in reporting key findings and producing clear, concise summaries. This includes proficiency with collaboration software (Google Workspace).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to create accessible reports, summaries, and consultation feedback that balance technical rigor with clarity.

If you were here right now, at the time of this job posting, you would be:

  • Reviewing the 2024 Seafood Certification Benchmark including process overview, timeline, certification standards, evaluation criteria, results, blogs, media mentions, etc.
  • Reviewing previous certification standards feedback, identifying known feedback opportunities and dates for 2025, exploring additional certification or ratings schemes with upcoming standard consultation periods, noting technical working group openings, etc.
  • Organizing the Asana project page for upcoming annual benchmarking (using 2024 page as a reference), feedback, and incorporating a tracking/metrics section for feedback and consultations specifically.
  • Identifying any areas of opportunity we should consider for ALI’s 2025 agenda.

WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW

While we have outlined certain qualifications for this role, we encourage individuals from all backgrounds and experiences to apply, even if they don't meet every requirement listed. In your cover letter, please provide a concise but detailed response that covers the following points:

We're so excited to share the expansion of our partnership with Sodexo USA—extending their plant-based patient meals program to all U.S. hospitals under their management. On top of the 131 Sodexo hospital accounts already serving plant-forward patient menus, 200 more are set to transition this year, with 400 adopting the program by 2026. This collaboration builds on the remarkable success of Greener by Default and Sodexo’s program with NYC Health + Hospitals, which launched in 2022 and resulted in half of all eligible patients opting for plant-based menu items—cutting the health system’s carbon emissions by over one-third in just its first year.  Preliminary data from a participating hospital indicates the promising potential impact of the expansion: if just 10% of the 290,000 meals Sodexo serves to patients per day shift from meat-based to plant-based, the company could transition over 10 million meals per year. “The continued success of patient menus that position plant-based options as the default demonstrates how small, cost-effective shifts can have an outsized impact, while still preserving freedom of choice for diners and ensuring their access to nutritious, sustainable foods that don’t compromise on taste,” said Katie Cantrell, CEO and Co-Founder of Greener by Default. “We look forward to our ongoing work with Sodexo, and to building more partnerships with forward-thinking healthcare institutions that want to make a difference for their patients and the planet.” 🌱 Read the full release: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250407391456/en/Greener-by-Default-Announces-Expanded-Partnership-With-Sodexo-to-Offer-Plant-Based-Meals-at-400-U.S.-Hospitals

For two months last year (Oct-Dec) Animal Outlook's investigator worked undercover at Manning Beef, Los Angeles' last remaining cow slaughterhouse. Manning Beef has long been embroiled in controversy notably during a 2021 incident when 40 cows escaped and a 2017 attempt to silence activists through litigation. Our investigator recorded one of the bloodiest and goriest videos in Animal Outlook's 30-year history. Over a two-month period, we found abuses including: * Multiple cows being butchered while showing signs of sensibility to pain  * A downed dairy cow repeatedly shocked with cattle prods after collapsing, then shot in the head three times with a captive bolt gun  * A worker stabbing a cow in the back of the head, then draining the cow's blood by stabbing them in the throat. This cow flailed while being butchered alive.  * A cow vomiting while their face was skinned and being restrained while moving away from the knife  * A cow left on the floor of the slaughterhouse for over half an hour * Extreme operational errors and equipment malfunctions. One cow was dropped head first from the slaughter line onto the concrete floor * Piles of unborn calf fetuses, extracted from pregnant cows sent to slaughter. Animal Outlook has submitted comprehensive video evidence and legal documentation to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, calling for a minimum of 95 criminal animal cruelty counts against Manning Beef, its owners, and its employees. We also uncovered information in this process showing that the slaughterhouse is in bankruptcy. Manning Beef has a long history of inhumane handling violations. Between 2018-2024 the company racked up 61 enforcement notices for inhumane handling, including two suspensions. The company's 2020 USDA suspension due to "an egregious act of inhumane handling of animals." In 2022, the company was again suspended for "a trend of repetitive noncompliance" with stunning requirements. Last week, the USDA issued Manning

Hi FAST! Sweden’s animal welfare law currently guarantees cows the right to graze outdoors during the summer – a unique protection now under threat. A government inquiry has proposed removing this requirement, which would mark a major setback. However, last week, the Swedish Green Party and the Left Party joined the Social Democrats in supporting a reservation to protect cows grazing rights, which ultimately gained a majority over the committee’s proposal to reject it. This led to a formal request to the government – sending a strong message that both the public and policymakers are committed to protecting grazing rights. This positive development follows Project 1882’s dedicated efforts to defend grazing rights. Prior to the formal request to the government, we presented 165,076 signatures from our “Jag vill beta” (“I want to graze”) campaign, urging the government not only to preserve these rights but also to expand them to include bulls and calves. We will continue to fight for the cows and ensure their right to graze is protected. Read more: 165,076 voices raised for cows’ right to graze – signatures handed over to the Swedish Parliament
