We’re excited to share that Accor, one of the world’s largest hotel chains, has officially published a commitment to exclusively source pork from group housing systems, preferably preimplantation systems where sows are housed in stalls for no longer than 7 days, in Brazil by 2026.
You can view the announcement here and download the press release here.
Scale: This commitment covers all Accor properties in Brazil, where the company operates approximately 340 hotels across all 27 states.
Timeline: In Brazil, NGOs have been in close contact with the company since the adoption of its global cage-free egg commitment in 2016. The issue of pig welfare was introduced to the company in 2018. It took them seven years to finally publish a commitment, but they plan to implement it in just one year.
Who: Alianima, Fórum Animal and Humane World for Animals.
Successful Tactics:
Accor was receptive to dialogue and eager to expand its animal welfare initiatives beyond existing commitments. With a solid sustainability track record, the company engaged constructively with specialized NGOs, whose collaboration helped shape and formalize this new directive.
Follow-Up:
We will continue monitoring the implementation of Accor’s group housing commitment with a focus on preimplantation or crate-free suppliers, including asking them to participate in Alianima’s Pig Watch Report, and encourage the company to extend this policy regionally. We also aim to support Accor in extending its animal welfare policies to additional species and increasing plant-based menu options across its hotels.
