About Us

Fish Welfare Initiative is an animal welfare organization that focuses on one of the most numerous and neglected groups of farmed animals: fishes.

We work to improve fish welfare by developing and implementing scalable, cost-effective, and evidence-based interventions. Our main program, the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture (ARA), collaborates with fish farmers in Andhra Pradesh to improve water quality and reduce stocking densities. Alongside this, our Research & Development (R&D) department explores new interventions to identify the most effective ways to help fishes.

Right now, we are in an intervention-development phase—running one core program while conducting research to determine the best strategies for large-scale impact. We aim to transition to a program scaling stage by late 2026.

You can learn more about our work on our blog and website.

Director of Operations

The Director of Operations will oversee our operations in India while helping shape our programmatic strategy and partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee FWI’s operations and legal compliance in India
  2. Serve as a leader in the organization
  3. Lead key partnerships

Ideal Candidate:

We're looking for a leader with:

  • Proven experience in operations management and leadership
  • A systems optimization mindset
  • Openness to change and a lean start-up approach
  • Familiarity with opportunities and challenges of nonprofit work in the Indian context and having the relevant local network
  • Strong time and resource management skills
  • Adept relationship-building skills

How to Apply: Once you have 1.5 continuous hours, please complete the mini test task. You will be informed by May 2 whether you are proceeding on to the next rounds.

Director of Programs

The Director of Programs will lead our growing Programs Department and run scalable, cost-effective, and evidence-based programs to improve fish welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversight for effectively implementing our programs in India
  2. Lead the Programs Department
  3. Organization-level leadership

Ideal Candidate:

We're looking for a leader with:

  • Proven leadership experience in running a program or organization, managing a team, and developing strategies—specifically, we are looking for someone with experience in running cost-effective programs
  • Ability to make strategic decisions
  • Openness to change and a lean start-up approach
  • Familiarity with opportunities and challenges of nonprofit work in the Indian context and having the relevant local network
  • Strong time and resource management skills
  • Adept relationship-building skills

How to Apply:

Please fill out this form. We will review all applications latest by April 30 and inform you shortly after.

Note on Job Designation

Depending on the applicant’s skills and experience, we may make them an offer at either a manager or lead level, as opposed to a director level, instead. This change would be reflected both in the final payscale, as well as in the level and array of responsibilities the new hire would be tasked with.

If we believe it would make sense to hire you under a different designation, we will talk with you about this during the hiring process.

Apply now or share this opportunity with someone who might be the perfect fit!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Althy at alethea@fishwelfareinitiative.org.

Hello FAST community! Leading wholesaler in the Horeca sector, METRO Italy has published a policy on the welfare of farmed fish, thus becoming the first company to sign up to our campaign Anche i Pesci (Fish Too), which calls on food companies to phase out the main causes of suffering for these animals. The policy outlines a set of criteria to improve the living conditions of farmed fish – starting with sea bass and sea bream – and primarily focuses on two key areas, in line with the guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and EFSA’s scientific opinions: * Effective stunning: As a current policy, all METRO’s own-brand fresh sea bass, sea bream and salmon products come from animals that have been effectively stunned (specifically, sea bass and sea bream by electrical methods, and salmon by either electrical or percussive methods). * Reduced stocking densities: All farms supplying METRO’s own-brand fresh sea bass and sea bream currently apply a stocking density of ≤ 15 kg/m³. We estimate that this commitment will impact an average of 805,000 fishes per year. Conversations with METRO began two years ago, when we first presented our corporate fish ask, and have continued with a collaborative approach since then. We will continue working with METRO to ensure the policy is extended to cover an increasing number of fish product categories under the company’s own brand. We will also leverage this significant step forward to promote further farmed fish welfare commitments from other food companies in Italy.
