We’re proud to share that Fundación Veg has drafted and promoted a new legislative proposal in Chile: the Bill to Ban the Industrial Farming of Octopuses for the Conservation of Marine Space and Soil and the Prevention of Biodiversity Risk (Bill number 17913-12), recently submitted to the Chilean Congress.

The bill brings together a broad and diverse political spectrum committed to protecting marine ecosystems and preventing new forms of animal exploitation.

Its purpose is to ban the farming of any octopus species in Chile, in order to safeguard the right to a healthy environment and protect public health.

This initiative arises from recent evidence that public funds have been allocated to explore and pilot intensive octopus farming systems — a concerning signal that large-scale facilities could soon be developed unless preventive measures are taken.

With this bill, Chile takes a decisive step toward protecting marine biodiversity and preventing the expansion of an industry that, if allowed, would cause significant environmental and ethical harm.

🙏 We extend our sincere gratitude to the Aquatic Animal Alliance and the Aquatic Life Institute for their invaluable technical and strategic support in achieving this milestone. Their expertise and global perspective were key to strengthening the scientific and ethical foundations of the proposal.
